원서 오트란토의 성 소설의 고어 표현 해석 "charge"

"오트란토의 성"은 고딕 소설의 시조격으로 잘 알려져 있는 소설입니다. 

Presuming on the unshaken submission of Hippolita, he flattered himself that she would not only acquiesce with patience to a divorce, but would obey, if it was his pleasure, in endeavouring to persuade Isabella to give him her hand — but ere he could indulge his horrid hope, he reflected that Isabella was not to be found. Coming to himself, he gave orders that every avenue to the castle should be strictly guarded, and charged his domestics on pain of their lives to suffer nobody to pass out.

마지막 문장을 해석하겠습니다. 

1. Charged: 여기서의 charge는 신하에게 명령하다 라는 말임. 고딕 소설의 시초가 된 이 소설답게  charge도 고어의 생소한 의미로 쓰였음.

2. domestic은 여기서 하인 즉 servant의 의미임. 

3. on pain of 는 숙어 표현임. 

on pain of 다음에 나오는 명사는 죄값으로 그걸 치뤄야 할 죄값의 이름이 나온다. 

그래서 뒤에 lives가 나왔으므로 어떤 명령을 어기면 생명을 내놔야 한다는 뜻이다. 

4. to suffer : 여기서도 고어체이다. 

~를 일어나게 허용하다. 라는 뜻으로 쓰였다. 문맥상 왕이 준엄하게 협박, 명령할 때 쓰는 단어로 보면 된다. ~가 일어날 시에는 하고 일어나면 안 되는 내용을 suffer 다음에 쓰는 형태이다. 

5. suffer nobody to pass out 

suffer가 사람을 목적어로 썼고 그 사람이 하지 말아야 할 내용이 to 부정사 다음에 오는 형태다. 

즉 4, 5의 전체를 합쳐서 의미 해석을 하면 

어떤 사람도 지나갈 수 없도록 하라. 라는 뜻이다.
